August 17th - JOINT MEETING - CHICAGOLAND CHAPTERS

O’Hare Suburban Chapter No. 193

Tuesday, August 17, 2010

Location:  Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen

798 W. Algonquin Road, Arlington Heights, Illinois

JOINT MEETING  -   CHICAGOLAND CHAPTERS

Speaker:         Bruce Ahlmann, Contact for the

City of Des Plaines Citizen Corps CERT

Bruce’s responsibilities as a volunteer are to develop and train CERT volunteers. The program is offered to Medical Reserve, City Personnel and Volunteers At Large. The training promotes preparedness of self, family, and community.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) was developed and implemented by the Los Angeles City Fire Department (LAFD) in 1985.  The Whittier Narrows earthquake in 1987 underscored the area-wide threat of a major disaster in California.   The training program that LAFD initiated makes good sense and furthers the process of citizens understanding their responsibility in preparing for disaster.

The CERT course benefits any citizen who takes it.  Individuals will be better prepared to respond to and cope with the aftermath of a disaster and can be recruited and trained as neighborhood, business, and government teams that, in essence, will be auxiliary responders.

Bruce will go into more detail about CERT, the training program and briefly how we can become better prepared for disasters.

JUNE 24TH - Lake Michigan Cruise to Milwaukee

Tags:

Ahoy!!!!  We have an exclusive invite for the June meeting (no Evite will be sent).

We announced at our last Tuesday meeting that members, only, have the first opportunity to RSVP for a Lake Michigan cruise to Milwaukee.  We have a private yacht that can seat about 14 people.  We will be boarding at 5:00 at Winthrop Harbor (more details to follow after RSVP’s have been received).  Departure time is 5:15 sharp.  Those that are late will “miss the boat”.  Cocktails and dinner (sandwiches) will be provided.  The cost is $20 per person.  (Remember, no shows will be billed.)

Once we have heard from all the members - there will be a few spaces available for guests – but the invitation goes with a challenge.  Members may only invite guests that would qualify as a possible NAWIC member.  This will be based on a first come / first served basis.  We need to grow membership and what better way than to have potential new members enjoy our company and the architecture of Milwaukee.

The tentative date is Thursday, June 24.  If weather is bad, we will reschedule to the next day (when the weather will hopefully behave).

RSVP by Monday, June 7 to be included in this event.  I will send another E-Mail out next week to advise status of how many more people can be invited.  Until then, clear your calendar and start thinking of possible new members!
